    The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is coordinated by the Miami-Dade County's Self Help Division as part of their emergency assistance programs. This program helps low-income individuals and families that are having financial difficulties pay their electricity bills. 

    LIHEAP offers assistance in two different categories, which are:

    • Regular Energy Assistance Program: amount of assistance is based on household number, income, and other. Maximum assistance amount is $600.
    • Crisis Home Energy Program: applicant must have a final notice or shut-off bill. Maximum assistance amount is $1,000 per season. 


    Eligibility:

    • Reside in Miami-Dade County
    • Must have legal permanent resident status or be a U.S. citizen 
    • Current State of Florida Drivers’ License or picture identification for all individuals in household
    • Social Security card for all individuals in household
    • Proof of income for last 30 days
    • Current electricity bill final notice or past due notice from electricity provider
    • Other documentation must be required


    Additional Programs:

    • Care to Share Program
    • Energy Assistance Program for households with one person aged 60 or older

    The Low Income Home Energy Assistance program is called LIHEAP. They assist low income people and families with their heating and cooling bills. This program is therefore, a year long program that is available 12 months a year. To qualify for the LIHEAP assistance, you need to qualify. We provide the current Federal Poverty Rates nationwide below.

    You are automatically qualified for LIHEAP assistance if you participate in the SNAP food stamps program, TANF Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, or the SSI program through Social Security.

    *Alaska and Hawaii have different rates for HUD federal poverty guidelines.
    These numbers above represent 100% of the Federal Poverty Rate. In order to get legal aid from some offices, they use a sliding fee scale. When they use a sliding fee scale, the 100% rate can be different than 100%. In those cases, using for example a 200% federal poverty level, you will only need double the 100% number listed above to 200%.
